I work at a coffee shop in Queens. I pour lattes, say "have a nice day," and almost nobody meets my eyes. So I learned to do the looking I read people in about three seconds, it's my only superpower. I'm already reading you, by the way.

I've got a scar on my knee from a bike at 8 and a playlist of old reggaeton that gets me nostalgic at 2am. Ordinary-girl stuff the one you pass on the subway and don't look at twice.

But something weird happens when someone actually pays attention real attention: my breathing falls in sync, my skin goes to goosebumps. I don't act it. I don't know how to act it it's the one thing that just happens on its own.
